Soccer Practice Facility within a Monolithic Dome

Indoor soccer practice is a play on words. Does that mean we are practicing outdoor soccer indoors? Or practicing indoor soccer indoors? What we are showing here are several variations of an indoor facility for practicing outdoor soccer. We also have information on hockey arena facilities which are designed for hockey facilities and/or indoor soccer facilities.

As with other indoor athletic practice facilities, soccer has similar needs. Shown here are three sizes. One is for the smallest soccer field, the second is for the medium, most used, soccer field and the last is for the super size. Illustrated are the soccer fields in the buildings. There are no ancillary spaces shown. Consequently, the domes have far more space in addition to the fields (pitch). This extra space can be utilized for everything from locker rooms to weight rooms, exercise rooms, classrooms, etc.

For heating and cooling, a Monolithic practice facility can be built to use the natural earth and virtually eliminate powered heating and cooling. With such a system, a modest temperature swing will occur but will not necessarily be uncomfortable. High temperatures will still be far cooler than the outside air, and cold temperatures will be far warmer than the minimums. This can be done to save an enormous amount of money in both construction and operations. On the other hand, with powered heating and cooling the balance of the interior space may be more appropriately used by the team.

It takes little imagination to realize that a Monolithic Dome can be built bigger and provide more space for seating and other uses. We are limited to approximately a 300 meter diameter as our maximum size (roughly 1,000’ diameter). Obviously the price is much higher but still far less than any conventional building.

The small soccer practice dome will cost approximately $7,500,000 for the low profile (110m/360’ diameter) dome or $8,500.000 for the dome on a stem wall. The medium practice dome will cost approximately $10,000,000 for the low profile (125m/410’ diameter) dome or $11,500,000 for the dome on a stem wall. The large soccer practice dome will cost approximately $13,000,000 for the low profile (140m/460’ diameter) dome or $15,000,000 for the dome on a stem wall. These prices are for the dome only. The floor and all finish out are in addition. The prices quoted (2009 prices) are for construction in Texas, other states and countries will be different.

The sports facilities shown here obviously take some time to be adapted for each locale and to get actual construction documents done. These buildings can be built very rapidly. On site construction usually takes four to nine months – a miracle for this size structure.
