Texas School District Dedicates New Dome Gym

Monolithic’s David B. South traveled to South Texas recently for the dedication of the new Eagle Dome at the Woodsboro Independent School District. The new Monolithic Dome, which was financed in part by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is being billed as a prototype for shelters of last resort in coastal areas, according to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

The $2.4 million building was funded in part with a $1.5 million grant from FEMA. The remainder came from a bond issue approved by voters in 2005 along with state funds. The building will serve as the district’s gymnasium, but also will host band programs, graduation ceremonies and community events. It also will serve as a safe haven when severe weather strikes.

Interest in the Monolithic Dome building has been high since construction got under way in 2010. Superintendent Steve Self said the district is welcoming visitors from neighboring school districts and as far away as Canada. “There are a lot of people looking at this now,” he said.
