[Editor’s Note: The house sold.]

Margaret Clayton is selling her Monolithic Dome home, Golden Eye. Set on Beacon Hill near Mexico Beach, Florida, the house is caterpillar shaped to fit the narrow lot. Traffic in front of the house is light even though it is only one street back from the busy beach road. It’s also an easy walk to two public access paths to the beach.

Clayton said she loved walking on the white sand beach early in the morning. “It is never crowded,” she said, “and often—maybe 30 to 40 percent of the time—I had the beach to myself.”

Called the Forgotten Coast, the region is a quiet place on the Gulf of Mexico.

When she moved there in 2015 from Marco Island, Florida, she knew she wanted a home that could withstand hurricanes. She researched hurricane-safe homes and found—and built—a Monolithic Dome. In 2018, she was glad she did as Hurricane Michael came ashore at Mexico Beach as a Category 5 hurricane.

I watched [my neighbors] house explode,” said Clayton. “The transformer on the other side of that house came flying into my dome wall. Then from attached wires, swung back, then returned, smashing the side garage door. It was quite the show!”

Swinging like a medieval weapon, the transformer smashed into the dome, creating a small hole. “All the homes around me were destroyed or are uninhabitable,” said Clayton in a letter about the hurricane. She was safe in her home. They covered the hole after the storm and, later, Monolithic came to repair the damage permanently.

Margaret said it “killed me to leave it,” but she needed to move closer to family.

The tubs and shower feature double-function faucets for precise flow and temperature control. Next to the dome is an enclosed patio with an observation deck above.
