‘Eye of the Storm’ in the News Again

It’s perhaps the best known of all the Monolithic Dome homes in the world, and it continues to make headlines every time a hurricane threatens the U.S. mainland. The Eye of the Storm on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, was the focus of another news feature after Hurricane Irene hit the East Coast.
While South Carolina was spared from the brunt of the storm, it provided the owner of Eye of the Storm with an opportunity to reminisce. “The old house was taken out with Hurricane Hugo,” owner Huiet Paul told WCSC News.
“We’re just thankful that we got wild enough to decide, ‘Let’s do it!” he says about the decision to rebuild with Monolithic Dome technology. “We’ve had many a happy gathering, and hopefully we’ll have a few more.”
Because the dome has been built to withstand winds of 500 miles per hour, broadcasters have often taken refuge in the home while covering hurricanes. This year, the coverage came in the aftermath of Irene, which skirted the property altogether.
Paul is happy to talk to the news media, even if it means that he might hear from neighbors complaining about the home’s unusual design. “I don’t think there’s any unhappiness, but if there’s anybody listening to your program, let me know. I’m not going to do anything about it, but at least I can give you my phone number.”
