Monolithic Dome May Be in Dodge City’s Future

When a multipurpose Monolithic Dome opened in Fowler USD earlier this year, it made news. Not only was it the first dome school building in Kansas, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency funded a substantial portion of the construction costs.

Now the nearby Dodge City Community College (DC3) hopes to follow in Fowler’s footsteps. In laying out plans for the college’s future, president Don Woodburn spoke about the possibility of building a Monolithic Dome on campus to serve as a student activity center. “We should have had one 20 years ago, we just haven’t done it,” Woodburn said. He then showed his audience an informational video on Monolithic Domes. “It could be a tornado shelter, not only for us, but also for the high school and people of northwestern Dodge City,” Woodburn said.

Plans call for submitting a grant application to FEMA the next month. You can read more about the proposed facility in the Dodge City Globe.
