Hobbit House in the Media Spotlight

It’s not often that a newsmaker captures the attention of the esteemed New York Times and the hip MTV in the same week, but that’s exactly what happened to Steve Michaels and his wife, Chris. They are the creative geniuses behind the Hobbit House of Montana, a guesthouse inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s book by the same name.

The Michaels started out with plans to build a simple Monolithic Dome home very much like many others built around the nation. But after their contractor commented that the dome reminded him of a Hobbit House, the Michaels began transforming the dome into a one-of-a-kind Shire inhabited by Hobbits, Elves, Fairies, Sprites and Trolls.

Now what started out as a personal getaway for the Michaels in Trout Creek, Montana is available for $245 a night to anyone wanting to make the trip to their magical land.

A New York Times reporter recently visited, and was pleasantly surprised by what she found. “A HOBBIT, according to the literature, likes to be comfortable at home, and the guesthouse, shaped on the inside like an inverted bowl, is first class,” she wrote.

Soon MTV will be featuring the home on the show Extreme Cribs, which features “the most unique homes across the globe” and the “creative families who’ve redefined everyday living and what makes a house, a home.” The Hobbit House episode is scheduled to air Thursday, August 18 at 3:30 p.m. central time.
