Managed Organic Recycling (MOR) Project Makes News

Covered Composting Offers Advantages

As the company name implies, Managed Organic Recycling, Inc. is in the business of composting organic waste. What’s more, they have come up with a faster, more efficient way to process some of the thousands of tons of organic waste that our society produces every year. It’s called the Compost Cover System, and it can reduce composting time by half. Monolithic manufactures the MOR compost covers using a special breathable Teflon-lined fabric.

One of the MOR’s biggest Compost Cover Systems was recently featured in an article on www.environmental-expert.com, a site that reports on regulatory developments and research and market trends in the environmental industry.

The article describes MOR’s covered composting for the Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility (CVWRF) in Salt Lake City. After composting at a remote location for over 15 years, CVWRF moved the operation next to its treatment plant, making odor control paramount. The new covered system allowed CVWRF to address its concerns.

The composting now takes place in two phases. In the first four-week period, known as the active phase, temperatures in the piles reach more than 150 degrees Fahrenheit. In the next phase, know as curing, temperatures stay below 131 degrees Fahrenheit for about two weeks. During the curing, the piles are uncovered and turned twice a week.

Once completed, compost is made available primarily to landscapers in the area. However, homeowners also go to the plant to purchase compost. The bagged product not only meets the demands of small gardeners, but also provides the promotional and sales tools needed for local trade shows.
